Many factors come in to play to achieve the goal of being an exceptional art and frame restorer. A vast knowledge of art history plays an important part, including extensive knowledge of the materials available at the time, prevalent influential styles, and an understanding of what the artist was trying to achieve and express with the work.

A repaired and restored piece, in no way, can reflect the same factors of the period in which the piece is being restored, or any personal agenda of the restorer. The restorer's craft must remain neutral, and refrain from personal expression. The piece ultimately must be true to the origination of the work and artists vision. Gary Owen's accomplishments extends over 35 years experience in various fields of artistic endeavor, has a deep and extensive knowledge of media, and materials employed to create works of art with an understanding of the historical period. Gary's main goal in restoring a work of art is certainly not to make a piece appear new, but to have the piece "age appropriate". That is, if a work is 150 years old it's age should be apparent to the viewer without the distraction of decades of dirt, chips, tears and neglect which can accumulate to the point where the artistic merit and craftsmanship of the completely lost and indiscernible. Restored work recaptures possible lost value, but ultimately to stop any deterioration, preserve the work and to allow it to show in the best possible way for us to enjoy, appreciate, and learn from. This gives us the opportunity to study not only the artist that executed it in a clear light but also the world in which they lived, inevitably leading to our world and passing that same opportunity forward to the worlds yet to come.
